FAQ

1. How do I get started?

Begin by ordering the DNA test kit. The kit contains mouth swabs which are used to collect a DNA sample by rubbing the swabs gently inside the mouth against the cheek. The samples are sent to the laboratory for testing using the return package included in the kit. Once your samples arrive at the laboratory, testing begins immediately. When test is complete, your results are uploaded to the app and you can begin comparing against famous people immediately.

2. What if I have already taken the DNA test?

If you have already taken our Y-DNA STR marker test (minimum 20 Y-DNA STR markers) or our mtDNA Sanger Sequencing test (minimum HVR1 sequencing), you can use this app without further testing. Click here to login to your DNA account.

3. What type of DNA markers are used for this app?

This app uses two types of genetic markers: Y-DNA STR markers, and mtDNA HVR1 and HVR2 sequencing data in FASTA format. Please note that Y-DNA STR markers are fast mutating markers in the Y-DNA which contain recent ancestral information, and are not the same as the slow mutating SNP markers found in common DNA chip tests.

4. Is this app dynamic?

Yes, each search is performed using real time data. As you get more markers and as more data and famous profiles are added to the database, your searches will become more refined over time.

5. Can both males and females join?

Yes, both males and females can use this app. Males can test and compare using two types of markers (Y-DNA STR markers and mtDNA sequencing data), and females can compare using mtDNA sequencing data. Females do not have Y-DNA so females wishing to use the Y-DNA STR marker comparison features in this app must test the Y-DNA of a male family member such as a brother, father, uncle, cousin or nephew along their direct paternal lineage.

6. Can I print my search results?

Yes, you can print professional DNA comparison certificates for your DNA search results with the click of a button. Hang it up and show it off.

7. How do you know the DNA profile of famous people who died a long time ago?

All of the famous profiles in the database are from validated and published scientific research journals. There are several ways to obtain the DNA profile of a deceased individual: 1) perform a forensic DNA test on the remains of the deceased, 2) perform a family reconstruction study on the remains of the relatives of the deceased as well as any living family members, 3) study the DNA of large groups of people who may be descendants of the deceased.

8. Will you be adding more famous profiles to the app?

Yes, new famous DNA profiles are constantly added to the database as new discoveries are made in the scientific community.

9. What type of computer or phone do I need?

You can use any type of computer or phone to perform your searches. There are no special requirements.

10. Is this app free?

Yes, this app is 100% free to use for individuals who have taken our Y-DNA STR test or mtDNA HVR1 and HVR2 sequencing test.
